About Black History & Culture in Indy

Black History & Culture in Indy is an interactive map experience designed highlight the history and contributions of black culture in Indianapolis. By documenting locations, events, and individuals that represent some of the rich history and culture of the Hoosier black  experience through text and photographs, users receive a primer on each site, as well as information about visiting each site to engage with history in a more hands-on way. The purpose of this site is give visitors an interactive way to learn about and connect with black history and culture in Indianapolis. This is a project of the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative (KKMI), paid for with funds from the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA) CreatINg Places program. The KKMI is guided by the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in an effort to diminish racial conflict, inspire courageous action, and strengthen Indianapolis. Special thanks to our partners who contributed to the creation of this site and its content. This includes representatives from the Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis Public Library, Indianapolis Public Schools, The Kennedy King Neighborhood Association, and RocketBuild.
